OLD TIME RELIGION

OLD TIME RELIGION
(Give Me That) Old-Time Religion (and similar spellings) is a traditional Gospel song
dating from at least 1873 when it was included in a list of Jubilee songs. It has since
become a standard in many protestant hymnals and covered by many artists. This song is
referenced in Captain Beefheart‘s song “Moonlight on Vermont” on his 1969 album Trout
Mask Replica, is featured prominently in the film Inherit the Wind and it also appears in
Russ Meyer‘s penultimate movie Beneath the Valley of the Ultra-Vixens and in HBO’s
CarnivĂ le.
Give me that old time religion give me that old time religion
Give me that old time religion it’s good enough for me
It makes me love everybody makes me love everybody
Makes me love everybody it’s good enough for me
Well it was good enough for mother it was good enough for papa
It was good enough for sister and it’s good enough for me
Give me that old time religion…
[ piano – guitar ]
It will do me when I’m dying it will do me when I’m dying
It will do me when I’m dying it’s good enough for me
It will take us all to heaven it will take us all to heaven
It will take us all to heaven it’s good enough for me
Give me that old time religion…
Give me that old time religion…
Yes it’s good enough for me
