I AM THE LIGHT OF THIS WORLD

Reverend Gary Davis, also Blind Gary Davis, was a blues and gospel singer and guitarist.
He has influenced the Grateful Dead, Bob Dylan, Wizz Jones, Jorma Kaukonen, Keb Mo,
Ollabelle and Resurrection Band. Davis became blind at a very young age. He took to the
guitar and assumed a unique multi-voice style produced solely with his thumb and index
finger, playing not only ragtime and blues tunes, but also traditional and original tunes in
four-part harmony. By the 1960s, he had become known as the Harlem Street Singer”
and also acquired a reputation as THE person to see if you wanted to learn to play guitar.
As a teacher, Davis was exceptionally patient and thorough; making sure students would
learn and adapt his original left-hand fingerings.
Just as long as I’m in this world
I am the light of this world
Just as long as I’m in this world
I am the light of this world
Well you don’t believe in Jesus
And not a word is said
When he come all the way down to Lazarus’s grave
And raise him from the dead
[chorus]
Well we got fiery fingers, Lord
And we got fiery hands
Gonna get up in heaven
And play in that fiery band
[chorus]
Well shout out over the water
I won’t be there long
My soul is anchored in Jesus, Lord
Won’t do me no harm
[chorus]
Well I’ve been confirmed
Lord knows I ain’t ashamed
Holy Ghost is my witness, Lord
Angels done signed my name
