“Get Together,” also known as “Let’s Get Together,” is a song written in the early 1960s
by American singersongwriter Chet Powers (aka Dino Valente). The song is an appeal for
peace and brotherhood, presenting the polarity of love versus fear, and the choice to be
made between them. The song was originally recorded as “Let’s Get Together” by the The
Kingston Trio and released on June 1, 1964 on their album Back in Town. While it wasn’t
released as a single, this version was the first to bring the song to the attention of the
general public. The Kingston Trio often performed it live.
In 1967, The Youngblood’s released their version of the song under the title “Get
Together.” It became a minor Hot 100 hit for them, peaking at number sixty-two.
However, renewed interest in the Youngblood’s version came when it was used in a
television public service announcement as a call for brotherhood by the National
Conference of Christians and Jews. Re-released as a single in 1969, it became a top ten
hit on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at number five. This version remains the most-
remembered today. The Youngblood’s’ version of the song has been featured in several
films, including Forrest Gump and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.
Following the September 11 terrorist attacks, the media conglomerate company, Clear
Channel Communications, included The Youngbloods’ version of the song on a list of
“lyrically questionable songs that was sent to its 1200 radio stations in the United States.
Love is but the song we sing,
And fear’s the way we die
You can make the mountains ring
    Or make the angels cry
Know the dove is on the wing
And you need not know why
    C’mon people now,
    Smile on your brother
    Ev’rybody get together
Try and love one another right now
Some will come and some will go
    We shall surely pass
When the one that left us here
    Returns for us at last
We are but a moments sunlight
    Fading in the grass
    C’mon people now,
    Smile on your brother
    Ev’rybody get together
Try and love one another right now
If you hear the song I sing,
    You must understand
You hold the key to love and fear
    All in your trembling hand
Just one key unlocks them both
    It’s there at your command
    C’mon people now,
    Smile on your brother
    Ev’rybody get together
Try and love one another right now
    Right now
    Right now!
